La Véridique histoire d'Equiano est un passionnant récit d'esclave, publié à Londres en langue anglaise en 1789. De la naissance d'Olaudah Equiano en Afrique, dans l'actuel Nigeria, à sa vie de jeune garçon, nous le voyons vivre libre. Mais à onze ans, il est enlevé par des chasseurs d'esclaves. Un navire de traite l'embarque vers la Barbade où, après un voyage épuisant, il est vendu à une plantation. Il passe en Guadeloupe, puis à la Martinique, avant d'être revendu à un planteur de Virginie, en Amérique. Là, il est racheté par un commandant de vaisseau : il reste esclave mais devient marin et fait le tour du monde. Equiano est baptisé, apprend à lire. A vingt-deux ans, il rachète sa liberté pour quarante livres et s'installe à Londres, où il devient une figure célèbre. Les abolitionnistes lui enjoignent d'écrire le récit de sa vie. Le texte d'Equiano est certes un acte militant, mais c'est également un journal intime, un récit plein de rebondissements, de rencontres, de découvertes. L'homme sait raconter son histoire et illustre toutes ses "identités" : Noir africain, esclave, voyageur, self-made-man et emblème de la liberté. Ce récit est célèbre aux Etats-Unis et en Angleterre ; devenu un classique étudié dans les universités, il est largement diffusé.
